Parting Line

The parting line is where the two halves of the die casting die meet on the part geometry.  This “Parting Line” usually defines the inside and outside surfaces of the part.  Viewing the animation to the right it can be observed that a purple surface is highlighted, the outer edge of this surface is the parting line.  In the next phase of the animation all inner surfaces are colored green and the outer surfaces are colored red.  The edge where the green and red surfaces meet is the parting line.  This green / red shading was performed with the draft analysis tool included in a CAD software package; all major 3D CAD packages include draft analysis.  CAD draft analysis is a quick and powerful way to help design and view the parting line of a die cast part model.  The final phase of the animation traces the parting line in green around the perimeter of the part.
